Overall Job Purpose

Oversee work performed by junior staff in the Tax Department while ensuring that the work done is in accordance with the BDO Tax Standards & Procedures and Kenyan Legal framework, ensure that engagements and all filings are done with regard to due dates and client expectations, ensuring all due dates are met and Communicating issues or status of projects with clients and management.

Roles and Responsibilities

Tax Practice Management and Execution / Quality Control & Compliance

  • Perform Income tax computations and advise on tax due and due dates
  • Review tax schedules and tax returns for submissions e.g., Income tax & VAT
  • Ensuring timely and correct filing of all taxes for clients’ i.e., Income tax, VAT, Excise duty, WHT etc.
  • Perform deferred tax computations
  • Advise refund application and follow up with KRA
  • Perform tax waiver application and follow up
  • Perform client tax health checks and advise on outcome
  • Perform client tax ledger reconciliation and advise accordingly
  • Perform tax due diligence
  • Advise clients on instalment tax due, due dates and assist them file on time
  • Perform payroll calculations, review and advise on correct PAYE to pay
  • Generate payroll statutory submission payment slips and advice on NSSF, NHIF, PAYE & NITA
  • Application and facilitation of Tax Compliance Certificate
  • Supervise assigned tax team to ensure quality and timely delivery
  • Evaluate performance of assigned team and provide appropriate feedback
  • Assist in risk assessment and mitigation activities
  • Organize trainings for the team on skills development

Client Engagement and Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with clients and assess client satisfaction
  • Monitor the progress of engagements against the plan and alter in consultation with manager when needed
  • Produce quality client correspondence

Team Leadership & Operational Support

  • Supervision and training of junior staff on tax maters
  • Monitor team performance and communicate effectively to ensure consistency with the firm’s quality standards and Tax approach
  • Manage, motivate and provide guidance to staff and identify training needs
  • Any other tasks reasonably assigned by the management from time to time and within the required skill set

Skills and Competencies/ Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finan,ce or other business-related qualification
  • Specialisation in a Tax professional qualificatioPostgraduateuate Diploma in Tax Administration) is preferred, or other qualification, e.g., CA, CPA or ACCA
  • Three to five (3 – 5) years of post-qualification experience
  • Knowledge of Prevailing Tax Legislations (Income Tax Act, VAT regulations, Tax pr,ocedures and related material)
  • Bookkeeping expertise – Accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivables, accrual accounting, bank reconciliation, debits and credits, depreciation, financial statements, journal entries, general ledger
  • Experience in public practice
  • Team leadership abilities
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral English
  • A strong personality and excellent presentation skills
  • Proactive with staff and clients and able to work under pressure to meet client expectations and deadlines
  • Organizational, supervisory and time management skills
  • Well versed with data analysis and manipulation
  • Well versed with various accounting software and applications used by different industry sectors and be comfortable in a computerized environment
