Overall Job Purpose

The senior associate of quality & risk management will coordinate, in liaison with the Head of Audit & Assuarance Quality Manangement (HAAQM), BDO East Africa's regional efforts in implementing and monitoring the quality control systems and risk management activities. S/he will oversee and implement all firm’s policies aimed at mitigating the firm’s potential risks and achieving high levels of audit quality, in particular, compliance with BDO Audit Manual, BDO Risk Management Manual, BDO ISQM 1 Manual, and all other related BDO East Africa and Global Policies.  

Roles & Responsibilities:

Quality & Risk Management:

  • Ensuring timely preparation and update of the risk and quality management plans and policies for the region, including actions aimed at compliance with the global quality and risk management standards
  • Ensuring proper documentation of the assurance quality & risk management systems for the region i.e., key controls, related policies, and processes
  • Participate in conducting internal compliance testing to ensure that engagement teams across the region, continuously comply with laid down quality control systems and policies, including evaluation of the impact of findings on the firm’s quality control system and determining the root causes for remediation
  • Monitor the implementation of annual audit quality focus or risk assessment areas as communicated by the global office or the region’s internal quality plans periodically
  • Prepare reports periodically on the quality & risk management activities for the regional audit & assurance service line with its leadership, showing results of monitoring activities including results of compliance testing, implementation of the audit quality & risk assessment plans, and remediation plans
  • Participate in the independent testing of quality control systems, including the tests for ISQM 1 implementation
  • Provide day-to-day support to other teams conducting the annual assessment of the quality control and compliance systems of the audit practice in the region
  • Carry out ad-hoc tasks as may be reasonably required by the HAAQM or the Managing Partner(s)
  • To perform other related assignments and tasks as assigned from time to time

Staff & Related Matters:

  • Liaise with the staff scheduling managers for an efficient allocation of staff within the region, up-to-date resource planning, and ensure that all procedures relating to this activity are complied with
  • Monitor and support the HR units to ensure that all audit staff members complete their performance goals and feedback within agreed timelines
  • Liaise with regional learning & development champion/manager/ HR units to monitor the training program for the year and ensure that staff receive timely bookings and communications
  • Liaise with HR units to ensure an up-to-date filing system for audit’s human resource issues and ensure that documents, both physical and electronic are not removed from their respective files
  • Contribute internally by facilitating internal courses and training relating to audit quality and risk management
  • Counsel, appraise, develop, and motivate junior staff as appropriate

Qualifications & Experiences:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting from a recognized university
  • ACCA or CPA finalist
  • Minimum of 3 years of previous experience working in an audit field
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory framework

Skills & Core Competencies include but are not limited to:

  • Understanding of the importance of quality and risk management, with the ability to conceptualize support to regional internal audit or compliance team
  • Proven ability to remain calm, focused, and organized and to deliver results on time when under pressure and with rapidly changing circumstances
  • A commitment to and understanding of the principles relating to the firm’s values & culture
  • Substantial experience in a related business environment preferably in an audit role
  • Excellent and effective communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information discreetly and professionally
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with others, at all Firm levels in the region
  • Ability to multi-task and finding alternative solutions when appropriate
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Self-motivated and organized
